Life of a cynic

There are times in my life where I just want to cry. Really. And I ask myself, "Self, why do you feel like this?" And the answer usually devolves into a convoluted self conversation that ends up with me yelling out load "Who you calling a psycho!?!"

But in reality, it is because I am a cynic. Not the annoying, bloviating bag of puss that must see the evil in everything. That is not me. I see it as a curse that I was born with. The curse of being a realist. And that makes me a cynic.

Every day I read my round of blogs, and every day I read about needless suffering, needless death, and needless needlessness. From some poor bastard who happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, to the thugs weeding themselves out, it is truly sad.

And the great equalizers in life, government, that is supposed to allow EVERYONE to pursue happiness, distill truth is just as corrupt as any group or business. So scratch that off the list of things to be happy about.

I am also blessed with the understanding that there is no god as well. So there is not great equalizer in the after life either. No one is going to burn for all eternity for what they have done on earth, or suffer for the wrongs they have inflicted on others. Not going to happen.

And that is fine with me. To be human is to feel, and that means to feel all the emotions, including the bad ones.

So why do I feel like crying? Simple. There are a lot of things to cry about.

Thank the god that is not there for better living through chemicals.

In my days running and gunning in the drug trade, I met quite a lot of older people that had cancer in some form or another.

And everyone had to sell some part of their script to support actually paying for the script in the first place. Basically, it was pretty sad to see these people suffer just to get by with what they had.

Now we have, once again, health care reform on the ttable. We have a party that controls both chambers of congress and a sitting president who has quite a lot of popularity.

Yet it seems that even with this scenario, it seems almost impossible to pass any real reform that would make a impact in the life of the people I mentioned earlier.

Is the system so complex that we will never be able to fix it?

Are our priorities as a society so off kilter that we cannot affect change in a topic that impacts all of us?

I think that in order to change the health care system, we will have to change the lobbying system as there are legislators that are basically owned by the industry. And until we change that, we will never be able to, as a society, do anything.

Just my two cents.

I thought that last night's "tribute" to Stan The Man Musial was crap. It was lacking in so many ways.

I met the man myself about 10 years ago. I was walking into a restaurant and I opened the door, and walking out was Stan Musial and his wife. I was just like a kid and started rattling off his stats to the people who were with me.

I am 36 years old, and obviously never saw that man play. Yet in St. Louis, if you are a fan of the Cardinals, you know all about Stan Musial.

Out of his inside jacked pocket he pulled out some cards of himself and signed three for all of us. He was so gracious and kind. His wife, just a little old lady, was like, "Stanley, you are such a ham!" You could tell that this was not the first time she sat by while her husband singed autographs.

He is, and always will be the heart and soul of not only the Cardinals, but of St. Louis as well.

Senator Al Franken

I have noticed that Al seems to be toning it down a bit when it comes to being funny. His pressers are very dull and his voice is very monotone. Could be how everyone thinks the Senate chamber is this hollow chamber that deserves decorum and what not.

I totally disagree. I think that in this day and age, Al has the perfect oppotunity to shed some light on the whole farce that is the Senate. Be funny. Be satirical. Be irreverent.

I have read his books and that is the way he should be. If you have not read any of his books, you should start with Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot. Funny and educational.

It is time for someone to shake up the chamber and what better way then to have one of the best satirical minds to do it.

Fatherhood, Redux

Since no one reads this blog, I thought this would be a good place to vent about the news I have received two days ago. I am talking about my girlfriend telling me she is pregnant again.

This is number two. My shorty will be three in November, so if she goes to term, he will be a tad over three when he/shit/(it?) is born.

My first reaction what "Fuck". Seriously, you can ask her if you know me and her. Then I was like numb for a few days, not really feeling anything. Then the fear started to creep into every nook and cranny of my soul like some underground flood bubbling up a basement floor.

Now I am in the phase I like to call "Nether world". Not completely in the acceptance phase, not out of the scared shitless phase either.

I was just getting used to being a father to Shorty, used to never having any real "me" time, never getting to do what I really want to when I want to.

But there was light at the end of the tunnel. Shorty was getting old enough that a movie could truly occupy his time and leave me free to do whatever I could in the vicinity.

Then there is the fact that Shorty was conceived only two months in to our relationship, and I was getting eager to spend some time with my girlfriend and really get to know each other without all the stress and tension that raising the son of Satan brings. (I know that makes me Satan, but sometimes the description fits)

Now all that is shot to hell. No pun intended.

So where does that leave me? I guess pretty much where I was before she told me.

I was not going to retire at 55 or anything like that, I plan to go from cubicle to grave, and this news does not change that at all. (I will be buried ass up so all those who did not like me can kiss my ass for all eternity!)

I am not getting any younger, and I do not want to have to change my shorty's diaper right after I change my own, so this is I guess a good time as any to have another shorty.

I am in a much better situation to have a shorty then I was when Shorty joined us. I am making 4x as much as I did then, we are going to move into a newly re-habbed house this week, and the girlfriend is fully employed with a job that pays her for not working the whole summer. (As an aside, that is cool but how in the hell do you ever go back to work? I could not do it). So all in all, things are going better than almost three years ago.

So what is this post about? I guess the ramblings of a very frightened man tyring to be the best father he can be to the one Shorty he has and coming to grips with the test of being the best father he can to another one.

Unbelievable. Lets stop crime by introducing more guns into the situation.

If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible; who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time; who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer.

It's the answer told by lines that stretched around schools and churches in numbers this nation has never seen; by people who waited three hours and four hours, many for the very first time in their lives, because they believed that this time must be different; that their voice could be that difference.

It's the answer spoken by young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and Republican, black, white, Latino, Asian, Native American, gay, straight, disabled and not disabled - Americans who sent a message to the world that we have never been a collection of Red States and Blue States: we are, and always will be, the United States of America.

It's the answer that led those who have been told for so long by so many to be cynical, and fearful, and doubtful of what we can achieve to put their hands on the arc of history and bend it once more toward the hope of a better day.

It's been a long time coming, but tonight, because of what we did on this day, in this election, at this defining moment, change has come to America.

I just received a very gracious call from Senator McCain. He fought long and hard in this campaign, and he's fought even longer and harder for the country he loves. He has endured sacrifices for America that most of us cannot begin to imagine, and we are better off for the service rendered by this brave and selfless leader. I congratulate him and Governor Palin for all they have achieved, and I look forward to working with them to renew this nation's promise in the months ahead.

I want to thank my partner in this journey, a man who campaigned from his heart and spoke for the men and women he grew up with on the streets of Scranton and rode with on that train home to Delaware, the Vice President-elect of the United States, Joe Biden.

I would not be standing here tonight without the unyielding support of my best friend for the last sixteen years, the rock of our family and the love of my life, our nation's next First Lady, Michelle Obama. Sasha and Malia, I love you both so much, and you have earned the new puppy that's coming with us to the White House. And while she's no longer with us, I know my grandmother is watching, along with the family that made me who I am. I miss them tonight, and know that my debt to them is beyond measure.

To my campaign manager David Plouffe, my chief strategist David Axelrod, and the best campaign team ever assembled in the history of politics - you made this happen, and I am forever grateful for what you've sacrificed to get it done.

I was never the likeliest candidate for this office. We didn't start with much money or many endorsements. Our campaign was not hatched in the halls of Washington - it began in the backyards of Des Moines and the living rooms of Concord and the front porches of Charleston.

It was built by working men and women who dug into what little savings they had to give five dollars and ten dollars and twenty dollars to this cause. It grew strength from the young people who rejected the myth of their generation's apathy; who left their homes and their families for jobs that offered little pay and less sleep; from the not-so-young people who braved the bitter cold and scorching heat to knock on the doors of perfect strangers; from the millions of Americans who volunteered, and organized, and proved that more than two centuries later, a government of the people, by the people and for the people has not perished from this Earth. This is your victory.

I know you didn't do this just to win an election and I know you didn't do it for me. You did it because you understand the enormity of the task that lies ahead. For even as we celebrate tonight, we know the challenges that tomorrow will bring are the greatest of our lifetime - two wars, a planet in peril, the worst financial crisis in a century. Even as we stand here tonight, we know there are brave Americans waking up in the deserts of Iraq and the mountains of Afghanistan to risk their lives for us. There are mothers and fathers who will lie awake after their children fall asleep and wonder how they'll make the mortgage, or pay their doctor's bills, or save enough for college. There is new energy to harness and new jobs to be created; new schools to build and threats to meet and alliances to repair.

The road ahead will be long. Our climb will be steep. We may not get there in one year or even one term, but America - I have never been more hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there. I promise you - we as a people will get there.

There will be setbacks and false starts. There are many who won't agree with every decision or policy I make as President, and we know that government can't solve every problem. But I will always be honest with you about the challenges we face. I will listen to you, especially when we disagree. And above all, I will ask you join in the work of remaking this nation the only way it's been done in America for two-hundred and twenty-one years - block by block, brick by brick, calloused hand by calloused hand.

What began twenty-one months ago in the depths of winter must not end on this autumn night. This victory alone is not the change we seek - it is only the chance for us to make that change. And that cannot happen if we go back to the way things were. It cannot happen without you.

So let us summon a new spirit of patriotism; of service and responsibility where each of us resolves to pitch in and work harder and look after not only ourselves, but each other. Let us remember that if this financial crisis taught us anything, it's that we cannot have a thriving Wall Street while Main Street suffers - in this country, we rise or fall as one nation; as one people.

Let us resist the temptation to fall back on the same partisanship and pettiness and immaturity that has poisoned our politics for so long. As Lincoln said to a nation far more divided than ours, "We are not enemies, but friends...though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection." And to those Americans whose support I have yet to earn - I may not have won your vote, but I hear your voices, I need your help, and I will be your President too.

And to all those watching tonight from beyond our shores, from parliaments and palaces to those who are huddled around radios in the forgotten corners of our world - our stories are singular, but our destiny is shared, and a new dawn of American leadership is at hand. To those who would tear this world down - we will defeat you. To those who seek peace and security - we support you. And to all those who have wondered if America's beacon still burns as bright - tonight we proved once more that the true strength of our nation comes not from our the might of our arms or the scale of our wealth, but from the enduring power of our ideals: democracy, liberty, opportunity, and unyielding hope.

For that is the true genius of America - that America can change. Our union can be perfected. And what we have already achieved gives us hope for what we can and must achieve tomorrow.

This election had many firsts and many stories that will be told for generations. But one that's on my mind tonight is about a woman who cast her ballot in Atlanta. She's a lot like the millions of others who stood in line to make their voice heard in this election except for one thing - Ann Nixon Cooper is 106 years old.

She was born just a generation past slavery; a time when there were no cars on the road or planes in the sky; when someone like her couldn't vote for two reasons - because she was a woman and because of the color of her skin.

And tonight, I think about all that she's seen throughout her century in America - the heartache and the hope; the struggle and the progress; the times we were told that we can't, and the people who pressed on with that American creed: Yes we can.

At a time when women's voices were silenced and their hopes dismissed, she lived to see them stand up and speak out and reach for the ballot. Yes we can.

When there was despair in the dust bowl and depression across the land, she saw a nation conquer fear itself with a New Deal, new jobs and a new sense of common purpose. Yes we can.

When the bombs fell on our harbor and tyranny threatened the world, she was there to witness a generation rise to greatness and a democracy was saved. Yes we can.

She was there for the buses in Montgomery, the hoses in Birmingham, a bridge in Selma, and a preacher from Atlanta who told a people that "We Shall Overcome." Yes we can.

A man touched down on the moon, a wall came down in Berlin, a world was connected by our own science and imagination. And this year, in this election, she touched her finger to a screen, and cast her vote, because after 106 years in America, through the best of times and the darkest of hours, she knows how America can change. Yes we can.

America, we have come so far. We have seen so much. But there is so much more to do. So tonight, let us ask ourselves - if our children should live to see the next century; if my daughters should be so lucky to live as long as Ann Nixon Cooper, what change will they see? What progress will we have made?

This is our chance to answer that call. This is our moment. This is our time - to put our people back to work and open doors of opportunity for our kids; to restore prosperity and promote the cause of peace; to reclaim the American Dream and reaffirm that fundamental truth - that out of many, we are one; that while we breathe, we hope, and where we are met with cynicism, and doubt, and those who tell us that we can't, we will respond with that timeless creed that sums up the spirit of a people:

Last night was a truly momentous night.

I could not help but think about Martin Luther King Jr. and what he dreamed of. And how I wish that he could have been here to see his dream come to fruition.

It is no secret why President-elect Obama speech took some parts from the Martin Luther King Jr.

I truly got goose bumps during the speech. When he was talking about the 106 year old woman and all that she has seen, and to see what happened last night, must be an amazing journey for her.

And when he mentioned what his daughters, or my shorty, will see in the next 100 years will be even more of an amazing journey, for all of us.'

I am grateful on many levels that Obama won last night, but the one reason that I am and that has not had alot of coverage is two words: Supreme Court.

Three justices are rumored to be retiring in the next four years (Ginsburg, Stevens, and Souter) and if Little Johnny McCain would have won, we could have kissed Roe v. Wade good bye and many other cases that give us some choice and privacy.

I have been blogging for some time that change must come. And finally it has.

But the fight is not over. There is much work to be done. Challenges to be met. Obstacles to overcome.

And we have to continue to work together to get this country back on the right track.

The next 4 years will be interesting, and I must say that today, I feel good. A feeling I have not had in about 8 years.

I stumbled across this...

That is a huge sample — Obama 51% (1,167,087), McCain 49% (1,129,945)... — and it is much closer than I would have thought. It is true that kids are thought to vote their parents' preference, generally. But if they are not voting their parents' preference, it is hard to credit that there would be big numbers choosing McCain where their parents are Obama supporters. Now there might have been a big McCain push with adults casting votes, but I doubt it. And it might be that the sample omits a lot of African Americans who might not watch as much Nickelodeon or who aren't as likely to vote online, but you figure that would also have been true for the Kerry numbers in 2004. Forget its predictive value. If this is remotely an apples to apples comparison to the 2004 poll, the Obama people should be very concerned with this. Or am I missing something?

Well is seems that the fed has finally pulled its head out of its ass and is finally going to do something right with the $700 billion we just gave them out of our pockets.

From an article in the NY Times, it seems that the plan that was just passed gives the Fed the ability to infuse cash directly into banks and take some ownership in the banks instead of just buying the "toxic debt" from the banks.

This will, in theory, give the banks the ability to start lending money again and jump start the economy with the new infusion of money into the economy.

This is akin to the plan the British government is doing.

An aside, the "new" plan just released my Little Johnny McCain is perhaps the most stunningly stupid plan ever devised.

Lets hope the Fed knows what it is doing, and this seems to be the first step in the right direction.

Update I: It seems Little Johnny McCains bail out plan is another example of his inability to make a decision. The first draft that his camp put out after the debate has a sentence in it that the “Lenders in these cases must recognize the loss that they’ve already suffered."

Then the document the next day had the sentence mysterioulsy abent. Meaning that any chance of not giving the banks free money (our money mind you) for their mismanagement was gone as well.

This is telling on many levels. First off, if Little Johnny's campaiin can not even put out a document correclty, how in the hell can they run a country? Secondly, and most tellingly, that what is important to his campaingn is not protecting our money, but protecting the very people who got us in this mess in the first place.

I have resisted on posting on this TRILLION dollar bailout until I read up on it.

Two things.

First, one cannot claim any credit for fixing something that you caused. If I am at work, and I screw up, I cannot go to my boss and say, look what I did! He/She would say, well you caused it, you should have fixed it.

The republicans cannot and should not get any credit if, and this is a big if, the bail out works. Since it was they who de-regulated the industry in the first place which allowed the present crisis to happen.

Second, when the following is anywhere in the plan, you reject it outright and start over:

Section 8. Review: Decisions by the Secretary pursuant to the authority of this Act are non-reviewable and committed to agency discretion, and may not be reviewed by any court of law or any administrative agency.

This is our money that is being used. Yours and mine. And it this goes though, our children's.

So between Iraq and this, the Bobo admin has asked for almost TWO TRILLION DOLLARS.

Lets hope the Democrats do not capitulate again and hold out for some transparency and oversight. That must be apart of any bail out plan.

I just posted about the FISA bill. And how i thought it was pretty sad move by the Democrats.

After having a conversation with WholeFlaffer, I have come to a conclusion.

This is not the fault of the Democrats, it is a fault of the political system.

How you may be asking?

Simple, as soon as you get into office, the VERY NEXT DAY, you have to start campaigning for money. I have heard that you need to raise $10,000 a day to get re-elected.

This bill is simply one of money. The tel-co's have the money. They are one of the largest lobbyist's in the country next to oil and gas. They have the money. And this vote was simply bought.

And this is a fault of the Democratic leadership. Ried and Pelosi are simply in the DEEP POCKETS of the telecoms.

So who do you blame? Who is at fault?

The people or the system?

I guess both. The system is broke. There is no morals in politics. It is all about money. And who has it and who are they giving it to.

And the people do not vote there conscience. They vote what will get them re-elected.

Simple as that.

And this is done by both parties. Obviously, the republicans are light-years ahead in selling their votes.

In between her futile attempts, Susan pleaded with us to continue trying and often smiled between the grimaces that accompanied her readings of Scripture. Just as suddenly as she went into the trance, Susan suddenly reappeared and claimed "Jesus is Lord."
With an almost comical smile, Susan then looked up as if awakening from a deep sleep and asked, "Has something happened?" She did not remember any of the past few hours and was startled to find her friends breaking out in cheers and laughter, overwhelmed by sudden joy and relief.
Jindal writes proudly about the experiment's conclusion: "When the operation occurred, the surgeons found no traces of cancerous cells. Susan claimed she had felt healed after the group prayer and can remember the sensation of being 'purified.'"The students, led by Susan's sister and Louise, a member of a charismatic church, engaged in loud and desperate prayers while holding Susan with one hand. Kneeling on the ground, my friends were chanting, "Satan, I command you to leave this woman." Others exhorted all "demons to leave in the name of Christ." It is no exaggeration to note the tears and sweat among those assembled. Susan lashed out at the assembled students with verbal assaults.
